I have always been interested in the creativity and individuality of packaging design for makeup, so I knew that for my capstone project I wanted to take this interest and make it a reality. I wanted to design a makeup collection that celebrated the beauty of the afterlife and the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead. My inspiration came from the delicate and colorful papel picados (confetti papers) that people hand make and decorate their homes with for the celebration. I took the intricate flower designs on the papel picados as inspiration to create a pattern for the entire collection. The typography is hand done and was inspired by vintage western fonts. I wanted to keep the type minimal enough to not over power the flower designs but still stand on its own. This project only reassured my passion for branding and I am excited to continue this passion in the future.
